The short answer
The right time to book a summer trip depends on what is scarce about the trip, not on the season. For the Italian lakes, it is the villa and the room you actually want, and availability opens about five months out. For Alaska, it is the cruise itself, since schedules are out about two years ahead. For Switzerland, it is the move north that many travelers are making for cooler summers. For a graduation trip, the date is set by the ceremony, so you work backward from early June.
I plan milestone trips for a living, and fall is when I hear the same question over and over: is it too early, or too late? Usually it is neither. It is a question of which part of the trip runs out first, and booking in that order.
What does booking early actually buy you?
Booking early buys you choices. When availability is wide open, you decide on the property, the room type, and the dates; when you start late, you take what is left and build the trip around it.
It also buys you time to get the routing right. The airport, the connections, the transfer, and your real arrival time shape your first day more than the hotel does, and that is far easier to solve with several flight options in front of you than with one or two.
Booking early does not mean booking everything at once. Villas and cruise cabins are the pieces to lock in first; restaurants and day plans can wait until closer to travel. Each trip is a little different, and what we book depends on the trip you want to take and your goal for the trip. Generally I try to lock in the destination at least nine months in advance, with flights and accommodations shortly after. if your trip includes private, difficult to access tours (for instance, an overnight stay at Versailles), we want to get that experience in place early because there aren’t many opportunities.
Early booking also buys you access to the best partners. When we start planning early, you aren’t one of hundreds or thousands booking during the high season. This means you get better service all around.
When should you book the Italian lakes?
For a summer stay on the Italian lakes, plan to book as soon as availability opens, which is about eleven months before travel. Villas go first, and the lakefront rooms and the villas with a real view are the ones that disappear.
That timing catches a lot of travelers off guard, because eleven months out can feel early for a trip that is still far off. For a June or July trip, it means the booking window opens in the fall, not the spring. These locations do not have hundreds of rooms, and those who are in the know book quickly. If you aren’t able to make that commitment, this trip might not be right for you at this time and we can find another location that works better with your schedule.
If you are flexible on dates, you have more room to choose. If you are not, ask your advisor what the booking window looks like for your lake and your property before you settle on dates. Check current requirements for any entry or documentation rules closer to travel.
When should you book Alaska?
Alaska is the one trip where "early" can mean a year or more before you travel. Cruise schedules are published about two years ahead, so the choice of ship, sailing date, and cabin is open long before most people start thinking about it.
If you want a specific sailing or a particular type of cabin, the earlier you decide, the more you have to choose from. If you are still deciding between a cruise and a land-based trip, that decision is the first thing to settle, because the two are planned very differently.
The season for Alaska is short, so popular dates fill. June will have more availability because it is early in the season and you might still have a bit of winter chill. Late July and August are going to fill quickly because that’s the “postcard” weather that everyone is looking for. Late summer into fall will also have a little more availability as school starts and the family travelers stop arriving. Cruise lines share their schedules 18-24 months in advance, and the best cabins will be booked quickly.
Why are more travelers looking at Switzerland for summer?
Many travelers are moving their summer plans north, to Switzerland and other cooler destinations, to get away from peak summer heat in southern Europe. That shift means mountain regions with good train connections and room to spread out are getting more attention than they used to.
If Switzerland is on your list, start with the region, not the famous names. The top 10 lists tend to send everyone to the same handful of places, and the quieter regions often fit a slower trip better. I wrote about one of them in What the Top 10 Lists Miss About Graubünden.
As for timing, treat Switzerland like the Italian lakes: look at the booking window for your region early, and be ready to decide once it opens. Hotels open their reservations 11-13 months in advance. Popular areas, such as St. Moritz will book early, especially around one of the numerous summer festivals they host. Don’t snooze on getting your trip on the books.
When should you book a graduation trip for Summer 2027?
If your graduate walks in early June, start planning in the fall. The window for a graduation trip is narrow: it opens after the ceremony and closes when college prep begins, often by mid-July.
That leaves only a few weeks, and every family member's calendar has to fit inside them. Choosing the window and the people comes first, then the destination, then the booking.
I go through the full process in How to Plan a Graduation Trip, and I will walk through the month-by-month timeline in a companion post coming soon. If you want to start sorting out your options now, the Grad Trip Guide is the easiest place to begin.
Frequently asked questions
Is October too early to start planning a Summer trip?
No. Planning and booking are different steps. You can start choosing a destination and a rough window now, even if some bookings do not open for months.
Is March too late to book Summer if I have not started yet?
Usually not, but your choices narrow the longer you wait. Villas, cruise cabins, and popular dates go first, so start with the piece that is hardest to replace.
Do I book flights or hotels first?
It depends on the trip. For most trips I look at routing first, because the airport, the connections, and your arrival time affect which hotels and dates make sense.
Can a travel advisor help me book earlier or find better availability?
An advisor can tell you when booking windows open for a given destination and watch for them, so you are not guessing. I cover what to expect in Is a Travel Advisor Worth It?
When should I book a graduation trip?
Start in the fall before graduation. The window between the ceremony and college prep is short, and the earlier you set it, the more options you have.
